“A truly special experience I’ll always remember”: Nurse Antonio on life in the Falkland Islands

A stay in the Falkland Islands turned into an unforgettable memory. Here, nurse Antonio shares his reflections on community, nature, and the unique experiences that made the journey so special.

What was your first impression when you arrived in the Falklands?

My experience in the Falkland Islands was truly special and something I will always remember. At first, the islands appear to be a very small and quiet place, but once you start to know the local people, you quickly realise that life there is full of energy, with different events and activities happening almost every weekend or on various days.

What was the community like?

The sense of community is strong, and I found the people to be incredibly welcoming and supportive. It didn’t take long before I felt at home, making friends not only within the local community but also with my colleagues, who played a big part in making the experience so positive.

If you had to pick the highlights, what would they be?

One of the highlights was the wildlife. The Falklands are home to five species of penguins, and I had the chance to see them up close and even learn to tell them apart. But it’s not just penguins, I was also lucky enough to see sea lions, dolphins, whales, and many different bird species, all in their natural environment. Every walk outdoors felt like a little adventure, and there was always something new to discover. The natural beauty and the unique wildlife gave me a strong appreciation of how special the islands really are.

How was everyday life different compared to larger places?

Life in the Falklands felt very different compared to bigger places. Some things that you usually take for granted were not always available or came less often. At the same time, this gave me the chance to value small things more. I felt lucky to have fresh local eggs twice a week, fresh milk once a week, and fresh mutton, which was always delicious.

Did anything that seemed difficult at first become a benefit?

One unique aspect was the limited internet access. At first, this might seem like a challenge, but for me it became a positive thing. It gave me the opportunity to spend more time with people face to face, build stronger friendships, and focus more on enjoying the nature around me.

What made the whole experience unforgettable?

The combination of all these elements, the friendships, the calm lifestyle, the unique wildlife, and the warmth of the community, made my time in the Falklands unforgettable.

How was your experience with Dedicare during your stay?

Throughout the whole experience, the team at Dedicare were absolutely fantastic. From the first day until the very end, they offered constant support and guidance, which made a big difference for me. One common challenge in the Falklands is that flights back to the UK can often be delayed due to the weather, but even in these moments, the Dedicare team kept me informed and reassured, making sure I always felt looked after and supported.
