With a climate of wet and dry seasons, from November to April humidity is at its lowest and temperatures average around a comfortable 24 degrees. During the summer months, temperatures reach around 30 degrees with infrequent afternoon showers.
The islands are known for their picture-perfect white sand beaches, local seafood and Caribbean cuisine, plus exotic wildlife including iguanas, turtles, stingrays, and hundreds of bird species. The Cayman Islands are the most populated of all Caribbean islands and the economy relies largely on tourism as well as large offshore financial corporations, contributing to the cosmopolitan feel. Local currency is the Cayman Islands dollar (CI$), which is often abbreviated to KYD but the US$ is widely accepted. Personal income is not taxable.
Air travel is available between all three islands with the cost of round trip being relatively low. The Owen Roberts International Airport located in George Town, Grand Cayman is the main transport hub to and from the Cayman Islands. There are regular flights from the UKs main airports, with a stopover required. It is also possible to access the Islands via cruise ship.
Healthcare
The healthcare system in the Cayman Islands comprises of public and private services regulated by the Cayman Ministry of Home Affairs, Health and Culture. There are 3 fully equipped hospitals, over 20 healthcare facilities and over 100 private facilities, some of which are similar to UK walk-in-centres.
There is an interesting patient demographic of which over 50% are Cayman nationals, the second largest group expatriates, and the rest made up from tourists.
Health insurance is mandatory for all residents of the Cayman Islands and should be obtained from government approved providers and a basic coverage plan will cost upwards of CI$300 per month. Some healthcare facilities will contribute towards the cost of health insurance as part of the employment package. Health insurance will be required for all family members accompanying you.
Taking on healthcare jobs in the Cayman Islands
When taking on healthcare jobs in the Cayman Islands you will be required to complete mandatory pre-employment checks in the UK in addition to those checks required by the employer as part of your application to work in Cayman. Dedicare will help with any document requirements needed to obtain the work permit and registration with the Cayman Medical Council.
To obtain medical registration, the Cayman Medical Council accept doctors who are registered to practise in the following countries – UK, US, Canada, Jamaica, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. You will be required to provide a letter of good standing from your medical council to support your application. Medical registration application costs CI$250.00 and the annual registration fee is CI$800.00. Some healthcare facilities will pay the application cost as part of the relocation package. You will be required to submit specific documents with the application some of which will need to be notarized.
Work permit
A work permit will be required, the cost of a work permit is in excess of CI$10000 and can take up to 3 months to process, this will cover an initial 6-month period and can be easily extended when required. Temporary work permits can be obtained in a shorter timeframe for circa CI$1500. In most cases the cost of the work permit will be covered by your employer. You will be required to submit specific documents with the application some of which will need to be notarized.
In some instances, you may be required to undertake the Academic International English Language Test (IELTS), the cost of this may be covered by your employer.
You will be required to have in place the appropriate medical indemnity cover which will need to be organised by yourself, there may be circumstances where you will be covered under your new employer’s medical malpractice blanket.
